Love Fall but Hate Orange? Here's How to Deal

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it's time for cooler weather and leaf peeping...and lots and lots of orange. Fall -- especially in New England -- is chock full of pumpkins, mums, gourds and the like for décor options, but how does someone who doesn't care for orange bring a little autumn indoors?

The great news is that orange is not the only choice for fans of sweater weather and PSL who want to rep their favorite season. Leave the jack-o-lantern on the porch and bring in these fun alternatives!

Natural Elements

Mother Nature is no slouch when it comes to supplying DIYers with materials for year-round décor. Fall is apple season, and this wreath from The Wood Grain Cottage proves that cider and pie aren't the only things that can be made with apples!

Branches are another terrific option for long-lasting, versatile autumn decorations. They can be gathered in a tall vase with seasonal grasses and berries, arranged with silk flowers across a fireplace mantel, or laid end-to-end as a low dining table centerpiece. Don't be afraid to experiment; the combinations are endless.

Decorative bowls filled with pinecones, acorns, and leaves can also anchor a tablescape or serve as an accent on a sideboard or coffee table. Use complementary colors found in nature in an arrangement -- for example, green mossy spheres in a red bowl -- for extra interest!

Pillows and Throws

Nothing says "cozy" like a sofa draped with a throw and accented with plush pillows! There are many textile options for pillows and throws, and the best part is that as with other accessories, they can be changed out as often as needed for a fresh look.

Faux fur is a popular choice for many homeowners; it's more environmentally friendly than the real thing and comes in a variety of neutral tones for use in just about any setting. There are even faux furs that are dyed in rich jewel colors. Though fur may seem heavy by its very nature, many faux furs are woven to be lightweight for year-round use.

Knitted throws and pillow covers can add a homey touch to even the most formal rooms. In addition to a full rainbow of available colors, knits are available in a nearly infinite array of textures and patterns and are widely available. In this modern age, anyone can have a beautiful heirloom throw without having to ask Grandma to pick up her knitting needles!

Finally, plush fabrics like velvet can add a touch of luxury and incredible softness. In addition to rich jewel tones like garnet and emerald, velvet is also available in soft neutrals for greater versatility in an existing color palette.

Mix and Match

Changing up your home's décor each season with decorative accents and accessories is a great way to show off your personal style. With so many options available, it's possible to choose a color palate for the autumn that leaves orange in the pumpkin patch! Mix and match and feel free to experiment!

Until next time,
